By Iacovos ConstantinouAEL were the winners of Sunday’s clash against APOEL while Anorthosis hit Ayia Napa for five and AEK Larnaca thumped four past Ermis Aradippou. Omonia continued their excellent run with an easy win against Ethnikos while Nea Salamina recorded their first win since the beginning of October against Doxa Katokopias.Despite taking an early lead through John Arne Riise and controlling play for most of the first half APOEL, collapsed after the break as an improved AEL hit back with two Tagbanjumi goals to give the Limassol team a thoroughly deserved win.The game though was marred by crowd trouble and referee Mashias had to stop play for twenty minutes in the first half as hooligans from both sides invaded the pitch throwing smoke bombs, uprooted stadium seats, and in general creating scenes usually witnessed at riots.Police arrested nine hooligans with further arrests expected.AEK Larnaca produced another display of fast and incisive football to thrash Ermis Aradippou 4-0.New signing Monteiro got off to a dream debut as he scored twice in the first half to give his side a comfortable lead. Two goals in quick succession midway into the second half through Vander and Larena made the points safe for the Larnaca team.Omonia, who many had written off a few weeks ago, continued their resurgence with a solid display against Ethnikos Achnas. Nuno Assis gave the Nicosia team an early lead but they had to wait until a minute from time to secure all three points when Skembri, who re-signed for Omonia a few days ago, took advantage of a defensive howler to slot the ball past Ethnikos’ keeper.Toni Calvo produced another sterling display to lead Anorthosis to their eighth win as they trounced Ayia Napa 5-1.Three penalties were awarded in the game, two for Anorthosis and one for Ayia Napa, but none found the back of the net. Calvo however was fortunate enough to score from the rebound to give his team a half-time lead. The turning point came in the 53rd minute when Kaminski saved Kolokoudias’ spot kick with the score still 1-0. Three minutes later Anorthosis doubled the score through Makris.Even though Ayia Napa pulled a goal back, the sending off of Messios a couple of minutes after with a second yellow card proved too much for Ayia Napa who let in three more goals in the last 15 minutes. A 35th minute strike by Enrique was enough to give Nea Salamina all three points gainst Doxa Katokopias. The win allows Nea Salamina to move five points clear of the danger zone, but with a very difficult schedule coming up, the relegation threat continues.
