SFO drops case against mining chief

first_imgThe Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has abandoned its case against the head of mining company Eurasian Resources Group (ERG).The ERG said today that ‘following a review of the matter’, the SFO had decided to discontinue its case against its chief executive Benedikt Sobotka. The case related to Sobotka’s non-appearance for questioning as a witness in relation to the SFO’s long running investigation into ERG subsidiary, the Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC). Having initially ordered an arrest warrant the SFO subsequently withdrew the order and instead applied to Westminster Magistrates’ Court to issue a summons for Sobotka to appear, but it has now abandoned that application as well.Kevin Roberts, a partner at international firm Morrison & Foerster, and who represents Sobotka, said: ‘We have always maintained Mr Sobotka had no case to answer and we are pleased the SFO has discontinued these proceedings.’At the time the arrest warrant was withdrawn Roberts said the behaviour of the SFO had been disappointing. ‘There was clearly no reasonable basis for a warrant in the first place which seemed more designed to intimidate the CEO of a multinational company rather than to progress matters and address the key issues,’ he said.A separate battle between the SFO and ENRC which surrounded legal professional privilege was heard at the Court of Appeal earlier this year. ENRC successfully appealed against a High Court order that would have allowed the SFO to request confidential documents ENRC prepared for its own internal investigation.Sobotka was never an employee of ENRC nor was he ever a suspect in the investigation. An SFO spokesperson said: ’The SFO keeps all prosecutions under review in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors. On such a review a decision was taken to discontinue a prosecution against Mr Sobotka, for failure to attend an interview contrary to Section 2(13) of the Criminal Justice Act 1987. We cannot comment further as the investigation into ENRC continues.’last_img read more

It’s something we’ve been talking about quite a bit in the last couple of weeks.”Dupree and Smith combined for 20 tackles for loss and 12 sacks last season. In the first two years of the Mark Stoops era, the duo combined for 36 tackles for loss and 25 sacks. This season, Kentucky is tied for 12th in the Southeastern Conference in sacks (13) and last in the league in tackles for loss (37).Q&A: Stoops wants UK to enjoy football againThe Wildcats’ 1.44 sacks per game would be the team’s lowest average since 2009. The team’s 4.11 tackles for loss per game would be the squad’s lowest average since at least 2003, the first year statistics were available.Of Kentucky’s 13 sacks this season, just 2.5 have come from defensive ends or outside linebackers. In place of the outside pass-rushing threat presented by Dupree and Smith, defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot has had to be creative in where he puts pressure on the quarterback.“Some of our blitzes have different guys coming and different guys dropping,” Eliot said. “Different guys are isolated at different times. We’ve had more inside linebackers involved rushing the quarterback than we have in the past. It’s something we’re working on every week.”Senior middle linebacker Josh Forrest leads Kentucky with 3.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss through nine games. Senior defensive tackle C.J. Johnson is the only other player on the roster with multiple sacks this season.UK Practice Report | Dawson has plan for QBDuring Kentucky’s current four-game losing streak, the team defense has totaled three sacks and been credited with just two quarterback hurries. While Kentucky was not credited with a sack or a hurry in a 27-3 loss at Georgia, Stoops said he actually saw improvement in the pass rush in Athens.“Cory (C.J.) Johnson had some really good rushes inside that helped us at times last week,” Stoops said. “We’ve certainly worked on that quite a bit and emphasized that the past couple weeks, of developing some of your guys and developing into better pass rushers.”Stoops pointed to a lack of third-and-long situations for opposing offenses where the defense knows a pass is coming as contributing to the low sack total.“We haven’t been great the past couple weeks of getting people off balance,” he said. “They’ve been able to get efficient yards on first and second down, and we haven’t had them in predictable situations.”Sign up to get more like this free in your inbox The absence of junior outside linebacker Jason Hatcher, who was suspended for the first two games of 2015 then was limited in Kentucky’s last three games with an ankle injury, has also factored in the drop in sacks. Hatcher is expected to be close to 100 percent against Vanderbilt, and his return will likely alter Kentucky’s game plan on third-down passing situations, Buh said.“I think to have him back would give us some more depth and give us some more speed at that outside linebacker/defensive end spot,” Eliot said. “I think he’s close.”Kentucky has also spent extra reps in recent practices trying to develop some of its young pass rushers.Redshirt freshman outside linebacker Denzil Ware, who has started eight games this season, is tied for second on the team with five tackles for loss but has just one sack. Freshman outside linebacker Josh Allen has one tackle in nine games but has seen his role increase in recent weeks.“We’re really liking how he’s developing,” Buh said of Allen. “He’s going to be a good one.”Practice Report: UK keeping practice physicalKentucky’s schedule will likely help boost the team’s sack total as well over the final three games. Vanderbilt ranks 73rd nationally in sacks allowed. Charlotte ranks 125th and Louisville ranks 127th of 128 teams in that category.Even with the schedule easing up, it will take time for any Kentucky player to approach the production of Dupree and Smith.“You weren’t gonna fill Bud’s and you weren’t gonna fill Z’s shoes,” Eliot said. “You just weren’t. Those guys were seniors. Those guys were very talented players that had played a lot of reps. We didn’t expect somebody to step up and fill their shoes. Those are special players that had a lot of experience for us and played a lot of plays.”Email Jon Hale at [email protected] . Follow him on Twitter @JonHale_CJ .last_img read more

Messi can go to the Guardiola or stay without football all…

first_imgIt seemed that Messi would belong to Barcelona forever. Like the elegant Eiffel Tower to Paris or the famous Statue of Liberty to New York. But Lionel Messi is a living man of flesh and blood. So unlike towers and statues, he can get angry. He can weave his dreams and ideals. And he can also move. Where? It probably looks like Manchester, England. At least Messi’s children will appreciate that his father sent them to a British school in Catalonia as well. Why Manchester? There are two world-class clubs. United also seems to be interested in Messi. But the main favorite for attracting Messi to the British Isles is Manchester City. And above all, the most important man of the club’s sports division. And that’s Pep Guardiola. The guy Messi knows well. However, together in the plane, the coach and his star have won the Champions League twice. In 2009 and 2011.True, it’s been some Friday. But that’s no reason not to add any common trophies yet. Messi celebrated his 33rd birthday in June this year. He can still and wants to win the Champions League, it would be his fifth time. But he sensed that it would probably be difficult for him in Barcelona in the coming years. That’s why he wants to leave. And according to The Athletic, he is already in contact with the Guardiola.▪️ Messi has told Barcelona he wants to leave▪️ Messi’s people have spoken to Pep about joining #MCFC▪️ #MCFC distancing themselves from the move▪️ What are terms of his contract & could he leave for free?▪️ Could this be a ploy to get rid of #FCB President Bartholomew?— The Athletic UK (@TheAthleticUK) August 25, 2020Of course, this doesn’t have to mean anything yet, the situation around Messi is complicated and can turn out in any way. By leaving for Manchester, or elsewhere, staying in Barcelona. Or also blocking his career for the next season. But it probably won’t happen. Nobody would make money on that in the final. But the next few days will show that moving a football colossus like Messi is as difficult as trying to move an Eiffel Tower or a Statue of Liberty. Let’s try to unravel the story a bit.Who is Lionel Messi?Perhaps even your aunts in the village square or intellectual posers know what they ostentatiously despise about football… Many football experts and fans consider Messi to be the best football player in the world ever. It is certain that, in addition to Pele, Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronald, he belongs to the narrowest circle of favorites for this unofficial title. And together with Josef Bican, Uwe Seeler or Ferenc Puskás, he is also among the best football gunners of all time.He is phenomenal in shooting, dribbling, ball control, in-game overview and endless production of goal opportunities. For yourself or teammates. Messi is a machine for goals and titles. So fast: 4 × he won the Champions League, 10 × the Spanish League, 3 × the Club World Cup, add cups, super cups… Everything with Barcelona.Recall his spectacular goal against Getafe, which imitated the solo Diego Maradona from the 1986 World Cup.In Argentina’s jersey, he is the Olympic winner and world champion under 20. What he has not (yet) managed in his career is to win the World Cup or at least the Continental Championship. He played the finals once on the world, three times on the Copa América, always unsuccessfully.Of the individual trophies, the most important are the 6 Golden Balls of France Football. Why does he want to leave Barcelona? The offspring of Newell’s Old Boys, an Argentine club from Rosaria, has been working in Barcelona since he was 13, when Carles Rexach recognized him as a super-talent and brought him to the La Masia club academy. The boy suffered from a lack of growth hormone, Barcelona funded his treatment.Since 2004, Messi has been a member of the Barcelona A-team. The club management built the entire sports concept of the club on it. And success came in the various constellations in which Messi functioned. He won the Champions League under coach Rijkaard, twice under Guardiola, then under Luis Enrique. His teammates changed around him, a megasile offensive formation formed by his connection with Neymar and Luis Suárez.Barcelona winning the treble back in 2015 when Barcelona arguably had the best forward line in the history of the game (Messi, Suarez & Neymar). pic.twitter.com/xaSbYD191w– Frenkie Chief 🇳🇱 (@FrenkieStats) August 26, 2020But Neymar has been gone for some time and Suárez is now plus or minus on the transfer list.In recent years, Barcelona has not been able to hit the right targets in the transfer market. Coutinho for 145 million euros, Dembélé for 138 and Griezmann for 120 million euros did not catch up.Then came the covid madness, a closed stadium for 100,000 people. And the result of all this is the fact that Barcelona has huge financial problems. And at the same time sporty, because she didn’t win a single trophy in the 2019/20 season, which she really isn’t used to. And what’s more… Debacle 2: 8 in the quarterfinals of the Champions League is perhaps still in the living memory of everyone. In addition, Barcelona has an outdated line-up, they have to buy a new team, which is difficult to do without money in the cash register, and selling older stars or pseudo-stars at their salaries is not easy. When Spurs lost 7-2 at home to #Bayern last year, I really didn’t imagine Barcelona would go one better but #LionelMessi hands in Barcelona transfer request after 8-2 trashing by German champs! https://t.co/Hw7fTPx0Lh— STEVE MOSS V 🌹 ☘️ #BLM #AnimalRights #WearAMask (@mr_stephen_moss) August 26, 2020For example, Ajax told Luis Suárez that after years in his staff, he would certainly welcome him again. He would just have to pay a tenth of what he takes in Barcelona. So it probably won’t work.Messi is falling apart in front of Barcelona. And it doesn’t look like a phoenix, it should take off from the ashes in a week or a year. Messi and his advisers see that the club is facing a longer process. And he doesn’t have to wait for the Champions League to win for the fifth time in Barcelona.Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol expressed Messi’s respect and admiration on Twitter, and Luis Suárez added an emoticon of clapping hands in response.Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend.– Carles Puyol (@ Carles5puyol) August 25, 2020The last straw was apparently Lionel Messi’s interview with new coach Ronald Koeman. According to what appears in the Spanish media, Koeman should have told the captain that all previous privileges for him and other superstars were ending from now on. And that he would be adamant about it. The only priority for the new coach is exclusively the team, he does not want to allow the stars any further relief or special regime. And so, on Tuesday evening, Lionel Messi sent a fax to the management of Barcelona that he wanted to take the opportunity to terminate the contract and leave the club for free. Will Barcelona let Messi go?Messi has such a clause in the contract, but according to the club’s management, he would have had to apply it by June 10. Messi and his lawyers argue that the season dragged on because of the covid-19, and the opportunity to withdraw from the contract in this way applies to the entire summer break before the start of preparations for the next season. It is scheduled to begin on Sunday, when players are invited to health and physical fitness tests. If Messi does not show up, the club will perceive it as a breach of contract by him.So a dispute opens up here. And that can end in either a mutual compromise agreement or a lawsuit. If both sides turn their heads and Messi refuses to play for Barcelona, wishing to leave for free, while the club will require a transfer exclusively for the amount specified in Messi’s exit clause, which is an astronomical and unrealistic 700 million euros, then they will remain things at a standstill. And Messi can spend the rest of his contract with Barcelona outside the green lawns. The Spanish media speculate that the club will propose a compromise to Messi. Namely, that it will allow him to leave if someone pays an amount corresponding to a club record for him. This means the amount of 222 million euros paid by the French PSG for Neymar three years ago.Barcelona would fill the club’s box office and make it easier to build a new team. In addition, it would save for Messi’s salary, which should be 50 million euros net a year, 100 million before taxes. It is speculated that Messi could be softened by the resignation of the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu. But with Barca’s current economic situation, hardly anyone else can guarantee that everything will change from day to day with the flick of a magic wand.Where can Messi go?It has been two years since the relationship between Cristiano Ronald and Real Madrid has been exhausted. And the royal club allowed the Portuguese star to go below the price, for 117 million euros, to Juventus Turin. There they were looking forward to returning the eared cup for the Champions League winners with him after years. It did not happen.Ambitious Chinese owners of Inter Milan would also like to overtake Juventus on the domestic stage and then start collecting European trophies. Club President Steven Zhang has been trying to impress Messi for a long time. But the Italian journey does not seem likely to Messi.Paris SG certainly has a better chance, where he could meet Neymar again. And the financial side of the club does not have the slightest problem for the Qatari owners of the club, they are perhaps able and willing to pay even the 700 million euros. But this would, of course, be difficult to explain to the UEFA authorities, which guard the principles of Financial Fair Play. They could wrap it up with this instrument right away if something like this went through. Moreover, the French league is probably not exactly the ideal place for Messi to continue his slowly culminating career.Forget about transfer within the Spanish league. People around Messi have already assured Barcelona fans that Leo will not really leave for the hated Real Madrid. However, he also scored a nice few goals for him, look at them:And so we will “be left” with the English league. Messi is also reportedly receiving recommendations from her close friends Cesco Fabregas and Sergio Agüer.With the “Free Messi” variant, of course, the portfolio of candidates can be very wide. The sum of over 200 million euros will already significantly reduce it. And the limits associated with Financial Fair Play as if.United would be very interested. But in real terms, the most important factors clearly play Manchester City. Not only would he meet his friend Agüer here, but especially Pep Guardiola. And also with the duo Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain, which are officials of the club’s sports section, who moved from the Citizens to the management of Barcelona and Messi knows them very well. From the good old days of success.Even the treasury of Sheikh Mansour, who is basically owned by Manchester City, is practically bottomless. And the fact that the club with UEFA is at stake for the Financial Fair Play, they have become accustomed to it here and so far they have survived practically unscathed. The penalty of two years of expulsion from the Champions League was abolished by the CAS International Sports Arbitration. Everything went well with a fine.So if Messi is not persuaded in Barcelona or if the phenomenal Argentine is not stuck there due to his inability to agree, Manchester City seems to be Messi’s clear starting point. Here he can win trophies, here he will pay for it, here he will find people he trusts.Of course, Arab or Chinese clubs can also offer a huge “rocket” for him. But with them, of course, Lionel Messi would not win the European Champions League. He may still have plenty of time for such destinations. And if he wants to finish his career somewhere in his forties, he is more at home in Argentina, as he has said several times. Although he is said to be hampered in his thoughts about returning home by fears that he might ensure the safety of his family in South America. But nothing like that is far from the agenda now. The whole world – and not just the football world – will devour every news of Messi’s other fates in the coming days.Pep Guardiola would certainly not despise the opportunity to join forces and raise Messi’s eared cup over Messim’s head. Again and together.last_img read more

NFL suspends Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott for six games

first_imgJoe Faraoni / ESPN Images(NEW YORK) –The NFL has suspended Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for the first six games of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension comes after an over yearlong investigation into domestic violence accusations by Elliott’s ex-girlfriend in Columbus, Ohio, by the NFL. The Columbus City Attorney’s office announced last September that they would not pursue charges against Elliot, but the NFL can suspend a player without legal charges. The 2016 Rookie of the Year is planning on appealing the suspension, according to his representatives.Elliott must appeal within three days and a hearing must be scheduled within ten days of receipt of the notice. South Africa hand England fifth successive defeat

first_imgBy Mitch PhillipsSouth Africa held off a fierce England fightback to triumph 31-28 in a thunderous test at Twickenham on Saturday to make it five defeats in a row for Stuart Lancaster’s side 10 months before they host the World Cup.Two tries put South Africa 20-6 ahead a minute into the second half and though England scored two quickfire rolling maul tries to get level, Schalk Burger got the key third Springbok score and the boot of flyhalf Pat Lambie brought them home. The victory made it 11 wins and a draw for the Boks against England, dating back to 2006, and was a hugely satisfying one following their defeat by Ireland last weekend. The frustration for England was that, just as a week ago against the All Blacks, they dominated the early stages but this time failed to turn possession into points and found themselves 10-0 down after 15 minutes after Jan Serfontein intercepted a Danny Care pass. When England did fashion an opening, poor handling or bad decision-making let them down, encapsulated when massive lock Dave Attwood ignored a two-man overlap and backed himself to get to the line, only to blow the chance.England had the best of possession and territory in the first half but were generally too lateral in their attacks and only two Owen Farrell penalties kept them in touch at 13-6 down. That gap became 14 points 38 seconds after the restart when Lambie chipped a perfectly weighted kick into the arms of Willie le Roux which the fullback gathered without breaking stride before slipping a lovely offload for Cobus Reinach to complete a wonderful score.England needed to hit back immediately and did so emphatically in the way they know best.A monster maul that South Africa, deprived of sin-binned lock Victor Matfield, were powerless to stop, sent prop David Wilson over and minutes later virtually the entire England team combined for another irresistible 40-metre charge that ended with Ben Morgan making it 20-20.South Africa showed, however, that they too could score through the forwards when, still with 14 men, they rolled over the corner for Burger to score and Lambie took his side 10 points clear with a penalty and a drop goal.Centre Brad Barritt scored England’s third try in the last minute but, just as last week, it came too late and merely made the margin of defeat look more respectable.last_img read more
