Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) has announced that its PLAT-O, the first tidal energy system to generate power off the south coast of England, demonstrated that the cost of tidal energy is rapidly coming down with such systems coming on stream.Jason Hayman, Managing Director of SME, said: “It’s a huge achievement for the team. PLAT-O has been generating power consistently, reliably and, most importantly has behaved as we predicted it would. The mooring solution we have developed and employed is as steady as a rock. “The installation operation went very smoothly and it absolutely goes to show that tidal energy devices can be installed in a low cost and efficient manner. Developing systems and deploying them in these strong tidal flows is a massive challenge but we have nailed it. The cost of tidal energy is coming down rapidly with systems like PLAT-O coming on stream.”PLAT-O is a buoyant platform that is taut moored to the seabed using an anchoring solution that has also been developed by SME. It sits under the surface of the water and offers a number of other benefits including enhanced yield and survivability due to its position in the water column, which also ensures that surface vessels can pass safely overhead, SME said. Besides a surface marker buoy, the system is not visible on the surface.The company PLAT-O is compatible with most leading tidal turbine technologies, and it can be adapted to suit a wide range of configurations.Matt Slatter, Chairman of SME, said: “It has been a very busy and very exciting time for the team at SME. The completion of our testing programme in the Solent is a major milestone and the culmination of three years of hard work. PLAT-O has lived up to expectations and we are now focusing on the deployment of PLAT-O at the European Marine Energy Centre and the build of the second PLAT-O. With the support of Scottish Enterprise, we are building the team to deliver a farm of PLAT-O systems generating up to 1MW of power at EMEC by the end of 2016.”PLAT-O was fitted with two SCHOTTEL HYDRO turbines and Leask Marine, an Orkney based company, provided the multi-cat, C-Salvor, along with deck crew and a dive team with extensive experience working in strong tidal environments for the marine operations.
Netball The Silver Ferns erased a five-goal deficit in the final quarter on Sunday to secure back-to-back wins against the Australian Diamonds for the first time since 2015. Just like in the Netball World Cup final in England in July, they prevailed by a single goal, 53-52, to start the Constellation Cup on a winning note in front of a sell-out crowd. In winning the fourth quarter 14-8, the world champion Ferns made quite the statement at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch as they began their pursuit of a rare series win against the Diamonds, something that’s eluded them since 2012. Super sub Karin Burger came up trumps in the final few minutes, winning a crucial turnover, which Ameliaranne Ekenasio (29/31) converted to give the Ferns the lead for the final time. Ekenasio was the breakout star of the Ferns’ World Cup triumph in July and she picked up where she left off in Liverpool early on, making nine of her 10 attempts in the first quarter while reestablishing her impressive partnership with Maria Folau. Six minutes into the second quarter, the Ferns’ lead had grown to five, as they continued to make the most of the turnover ball they were winning, but they were swiftly kept in check, as they failed to make the most of an intercept by Katrina Rore that had presented them with an excellent chance to go up seven. The Diamonds mounted a comeback to end the half, closing the margin to a single goal on the back of a 7-3 run in the final five minutes, while their defence did a good job of frustrating Ekenasio and Folau at the other end. As the third quarter began, the two teams went goal for goal, with Folau taking on the bulk of the shooting load for the Ferns, scoring their first four goals in the period. Ferns coach Noeline Taurua made a change to start the final quarter, introducing Burger in place of Karaka at goal defence, then watched on as her team closed the gap to two, winning two turnovers either side of losing the ball up themselves. Diamonds wing attack Laura Scherian had coughed up the first of those turnovers and was soon at fault again, penalised for breaking, which allowed the Ferns to close within one with 10 minutes to play, then for being offside, which allowed Folau to net the equaliser. Ekenasio then won the ball down the court before converting twice in a row to put the Ferns back in front by two with six minutes to play, but her second miss of the afternoon allowed Gretel Tippett to tie things up for the Diamonds with two minutes on the clock. Overwatch team New York Excelsior (NYXL) and Los Angeles-based brand Undefeated are partnering up to release special edition jersey.NYXL may not be fighting it out for the first Overwatch League title but the organisation is taking full advantage of the event. The team announced through social media a new pop-up store in Brooklyn, New York. The store is located at a walking distance from the Barclays Centre where the first final is taking place this weekend.To celebrate the opening of the store, NYXL and Undefeated are releasing a limited edition jersey.
